For millions of years nature has created organs that can sense ultrasound, both in sending and receiving in insects and other creatures.
Bats for example locate their food in the dark through sending and receiving ultrasound with high precision.
Science and technique have imitated this natural process which is used in many useful innovations. To give a few examples: ultrasonic diagnosis, nondestructive material testing, ultrasonic cleaning and ultrasonic assembly of metal and thermoplastic materials.
